Magnet Theme
Pilot Knob became a magnet school in 2010 and is one of four magnet schools in District 197.
Pilot Knob offers the same comprehensive curriculum as the district’s other elementary schools, but with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) integrated into every class--even physical education! The school has gained state and national recognitions, including being named a National Magnet School of Excellence in 2013, 2015 and 2016 and a Magnet School of Distinction in 2014 and 2018.
As a STEM magnet school, creative and critical thinking is at the core of everything at Pilot Knob. Through STEM-based experiences in and outside the classroom, Pilot Knob teachers and staff support and enhance children's intellectual, social, emotional and physical development.
At Pilot Knob, students:
- Use up-to-date educational technology to promote individualized learning, including interactive whiteboards in all classrooms, one-to-one iPads for our 3rd and 4th grade students, and iPad and Macbook carts for use throughout the school.
- Participate in robotics and pre-robotics engineering programs which provide opportunities to learn design and programming skills.
- Learn through an Elementary Engineering curriculum which develops engineering thinking and problem solving.
- Explore their "STEM Sparks" through elective classes once each week.
- Interact with adult professionals working in STEM-related career fields through an ongoing lunchtime speaker series.
- Develop a Growth Mindset, which instills in each child the motivation and belief that they can achieve goals and reach success in anything they choose.
